OUR TOFTY GIRLS
The strength of a kennel lies in the diversity of its mitochondrial female lines.
our girls are loved for being dogs. I don't need to show a dog to prove its worth, every dog is unique with unique qualities. Although our girls will on occasion be allowed to produce carefully planned naturally raised puppies they are primarily our joy. We are not a business! our dogs are a huge part of our life and we enjoy them. They are part of an extremely important PRESERVATION program. I take this opportunity to thank Dr Anthony of Castle Hill cardiology department and his skilled team for giving me an extra lease of life in October 2024 which has allowed to me to continue this very important work.

By combining our world famous genetically tested Rough collies with an ancient landrace breed that was its ancestor (Welsh Sheepdog) we began our restoration project. This is now known as 'The Tofty project'
This journey began by delving into the unknown, guided by fifty years gaining knowledge and experience plus a comprehensive plan of genetic testing, we took a leap of faith and in 2019 we purchased our first top quality Welsh sheepdog. From these early beginnings we have learned so very much and I am presently writing a book that will explain the project and follow its progress. In the above photo we have Sheila in the background and her daughter Hilda in the foreground. Many of our puppies were initially either kept by us or given away, mainly because we didn't know how they would develop. When we do have puppies available they are at very sensible prices, far below the cost of a purebred rough collie. We guarantee that such puppies will be unaffected by collie eye anomaly (cea) no Tofty is either carrier or affected by degenerative myelopathy (dm) and any puppy that has a parent carrying the mdr1 gene mutation (none of our puppies will carry two copies) will go to its new home having been dna tested so the new owner will know its genetic status and be able to tell their vet. NO TOFTY WILL CARRY TWO COPIES OF THE MDR1 MUTATION. We are working diligently to strengthen the immune system of our dogs by introducing much needed diversity in the immune system haplotypes. This is why we began this project. The Collie as a breed worldwide, is dangerously short of diversity in the immune system ,
